EM2000: ELECTROMAGNETIC LOG SYSTEM

OVERVIEW

EM2000 is a cost effective, highly reliable and accurate electromagnetic speed log having a wide range of applications, from ocean-going merchant and passenger vessels to coastal patrol craft for police or customs use.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

EM2000 is founded on the well proven electromagnetic principle that a voltage is induced in a conductor by a moving magnetic field. A sensor attached to the hull of the vessel produces an electromagnetic field, by using the water as the conductor. An output is generated as the vessel progresses, relative to the ship’s speed through the water.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

Typically the EM2000 system comprises of:

Main Electronics Unit (MEU)

User Interface Panel (UIP)

Underwater Sensors

Speed & Distance Repeaters

Main Electronics Unit (MEU)
User Interface Panel (UIP)
The Main Electronics Unit houses the system electronics, power supply and output facilities for displays, and interfacing to ship’s navigation system.
Neatly styled to be console or adjustable bulkhead mounted, the User Interface Panel provides “speed” and “distance” displayed with dimmable backlighting, “trip distance” function and calibration facilities.

Underwater Sensors
Repeaters
EM2000 sensors are available in ‘retractable protruding’ or ‘retractable flush’ form, complete with hull fitting gate valve to enable probes to be fully retracted inboard. In addition AGI have developed a ‘fixed flush’ probe for surface mounting.
These are optionally available in either a digital or analogue format and may be console or bulkhead mounted – each instrument has backlighting

CALIBRATION

With the EM2000, calibration is simply achieved. A ‘user friendly’ interface via the User Interface Panel permits easy entry of calibration data. This merely involves “zeroing” the system and entering up to four randomly selected “actual” and “measured” speeds for non-linear correction.

OUTPUTS

The following outputs are available as standard from the EM2000 System:

  • Serial data to NMEA 183 TTL or RS422 Buffered
  • Analogue voltage 0.1V/knot at 7.5mA max
  • Dedicated repeater output to drive up to four EM2000 digital or analogue speed repeaters
  • Simulated potentiometer, ref Voltage AC, or DC/10V peak output up to 7.5mA 1K 5W, 75W/knot
  • Four user-selectable potential free contacts, for any combination of 100,200 and 400 pulses per nautical mile 0.5A max at 150V peak AC or DC
