AGILOG: ELECTROMAGNETIC LOG SYSTEM

OVERVIEW

Developed for use on surface warships and submarines, and in service with many navies worldwide, AGILOG sets the standard for accurate and reliable measurement of ship’s speed through the water – an essential element in navigation and weapons system integration.

AGILOG's international reputation stems from over 40 years of experience by AGI, in the design and manufacture of ship’s log systems for the British Royal Navy and over 40 other navies worldwide. Covering all classes of vessels – from nuclear and conventional submarines, aircraft carriers and frigates, to fast patrol boats, mine-hunters and fleet support ships.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

Speed & Distance Transmitter Unit (SDTU) Bulkhead Mounted

AGILOG is founded on the well proven electromagnetic principle that a voltage is induced in a conductor by a moving magnetic field. A sensor attached to the hull of the vessel produces an electromagnetic field, by using the water as the conductor. An output is generated as the vessel progresses, relative to the ship’s speed through the water.

Electromagnetic speed measurement is passive in operation and therefore particularly suitable for use in submarines and warships.

SPEED & DISTANCE TRANSMITTER

Available in bulkhead mounted form or alternatively as part of an integrated 19 inch rack system.

Facilities include:

Simulation Mode Selection – enabling operation of the Log System in the absence of a signal from the underwater sensor.

Underwater Sensor Selection – AGILOG enables the alternative use of two sensors, each sensor independently calibrated.

Calibration Curve Selection – Each sensor may, if required, be calibrated for two alternative operating conditions. (A typical example being changes in water flow, caused by a retractable sonar dome in the vicinity of the sensor).

Self-test Capability – AGILOG contains full BITE (built in test equipment) facilities.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

Typically the AGILOG system comprises:

Speed & Distance Transmitter Unit (SDTU)

Underwater Sensor(s)

Speed & Distance Repeaters

Optional Retransmission Unit (for system expansion)

UNDERWATER SENSORS

A comprehensive range of sensors are offered to meet all applications . . . . . .

Fixed Probe – offering extremely high accuracy, with protrusion beyond the ship’s boundary layer.

Low Profile
or ‘Fin’ Probe – offering reduced protrusion. Typical application - patrol boats and coastal vessels.

Flush Sensor – with the advantage of the absence of underwater protrusion, for shallow water operations and avoidance of floating debris or ice. Available in a surface mounted or inboard retractable form.

Retractable Rodmeter
– for high accuracy, consistent with inboard maintainability

OUTPUTS AND DATA TRANSMISSION

Generous output facilities are available from the AGILOG system, typically:

  • Up to 2 solid-state synchro outputs, pre-set to required scaling factors.
  • Analogue voltage, selectable 0.1V/knot to 0.4V/knot.
  • Up to four sets of solid-state programmable potential free contacts, factory set to provide distance outputs of 100, 200 or 400 pulses per mile, or to provide facility for fault indication, speed limit indication etc. . . Digital output, available as standard in binary form to RS422 format, balanced transmission line for connection to ship’s weapon system, or the direct operation of AGI Solid State Repeater.
  • Additional optional outputs - RS232, RS485 or Ethernet.

DATA HIGHWAY INTERFACE

AGILOG may be readily adapted to interface with modern data bus systems.

SYSTEM EXPANSION

Additional outputs may be provided with a custom built retransmission and data distribution unit, using AGILOG standard outputs modules and tailored to individual ship’s system requirements.

SPEED & DISTANCE REPEATERS

Constructed to full defence standards, these instruments employ latest solid-state display technology for maximum readability in a wide range of ambient conditions – from direct sunlight to night viewing.

A full range of repeaters are available for displaying Meteorological data and Navigation data, see our Repeaters / Displays section, for full details.

SYSTEMS ENGINEERING & THROUGH LIFE SUPPORT

AGI offers total systems design and engineering support. This includes installation, commissioning, operators and maintainers training, documentation, etc., providing complete spares, support, overhaul and repair services.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

AGI is assessed to BS En ISO 9001, including TickIT quality approvals for design, manufacture, test, installation, servicing and software disciplines.
